The bladder and uterus are supported by these muscles so that it is an important muscle in childbirth. When we talk about strengthening these muscles, we talk about a muscle group that is comprised of pelvic floor muscles and abdominal and back muscles, too.That is why health professionals often try and get women to strengthen pelvic floor muscles for back pain relief. This can help with relief from other health problems as well.

Performing pelvic floor exercises for a short period every day strengthens these muscles

The pelvic floor muscles are the unsung workhorses in the life of a woman. Located at the base of the abdomen and adjacent to the vaginal canal, they support the spine, which helps prevent back pain; they hold the foetus during pregnancy and push the baby out during childbirth; they are responsible for a women’s sexual experience; and they help to control the flow of urine.

 

Commonly, women report a decrease in quality of sexual experience following childbirth. This is due to the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. If left unchecked, this often develops into back pain, urinary and faecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where the bladder or uterus protrudes into the vaginal canal, requiring surgical correction.

 

All of this can be prevented by simply strengthening the pelvic floor muscles through exercise. The Australian government advises, “Every woman who has had a baby should do pelvic floor muscle training.”

 

But as a group of media representatives and bloggers learnt from physiotherapist SuhailaShohaimi of Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM), this is often far easier said than done.

 

Many women end up using the wrong muscle group, or applying the wrong technique, reaping no reward for their efforts.

The pelvic floor muscles comprise of ligaments and tendons, which are interwoven into a complex structure. Any damage or weakening of these muscles may result in many health problems during child birth, after child birth, bladder problems, back pain, and so on. It is often suggested by doctors and health practitioners that women should exercise so that they strengthen pelvic floor muscles for back pain relief because these muscles are the core muscles.
 
There are many causes of the weakening of these muscles. Some of the reasons are a woman’s age, the common problem of being inactive with age, and lack of exercising these muscles after child birth. The weakening of the muscles of the pelvic floor results in a lot of complications that women are often embarrassed to express. The sexual urge reduces, too, as the quality of the sexual experience gets reduced.  Bladder control can also be affected. So, to avoid all these problems, and stay healthy and physically fit, proper regular exercise of pelvic floor muscles is required to make them strong. This is the only solution to some of the common problems associated with weak pelvic floor muscles.
