Back pain medication

Among all the ways used for getting back pain relief, proper medication has been found to be very useful. Back pain medication is an effective method of back pain treatment. While administering medicine, care should be taken with pain management, which is the most important part before medicinal treatment for inflammation pain. There are medicines that should be taken if the back pain is particularly severe.

Medicines providing back pain relief are available in oral, injection, and topical forms, with each one having special effects on relieving pain and assisting healing. Non-prescribed drugs are in use widely because of their common availability and generality in treating pain. These drugs are usually taken orally, and they have varied benefits. They can be risky as all patients may not be conducive to them, and they may not be treating the pain effectively. Topical medication includes those that are applied on the skin at the source of the pain. Most of these topical medicines are available without any prescription. These medicines may be sometimes effective, but some users bear the risk of skin irritation and allergy.

Back pain medication includes injections, which are applied directly into the muscle where the back pain is located. These injections are available only on prescription, and the dosage depends upon the advice of the doctor. The use of a selective nerve root block injection is a common medicinal treatment for back pain. It is diagnosed to specify the nerve root source of the pain, and it can be useful for therapeutic relief of back pain in the lower lumbar region. The use of this injection is sometimes associated with two other medicines applied through injection, which are steroids for anti-inflammatory medication and Lidocaine. Lidocaine numbs the area and relieves the pain. Oral steroids may be considered for short term use for anti inflammatory treatment.

Medicinal treatment can reduce lower back pain considerably, but while going for this type of treatment, you should consult a doctor. Tylenol and other anti-inflammatory drugs are effective, but it is advisable to use those that are non-steroidal like ibuprofen and aspirin. To combat sudden attacks of severe back pain, you may use narcotic pain medicines, which are very strong pain relievers. Those suffering from chronic back pain may use these drugs. As these drugs are addictive if taken for prolonged periods, it is necessary to take these under medical supervision. One of the important factors governing back pain is mental depression. Antidepressants are available on the market, but the dosage has to be confirmed by a doctor. Other medicines that are available  have not been as thoroughly researched about their positive effect. These include steroid injections and anticonvulsants.

Other types of medication include muscle relaxants, which act on the central nervous system via receptors in the brain to bring a relaxing effect within the body and relieve the back pain. Muscle relaxants are prescribed for short term use during the early stages of the back pain, which are associated with spasms in the muscles. There are commonly used muscle relaxants, some of which are available without prescription. Oral pain relief falls into the narcotic group of medicines for remedy of lower back pain. One example is Ultram. This medicine is administered to act on the central nervous system, which modulates the pain sensation. It is a strong pain reliever, but it does not have an anti-inflammatory effect. Epidural steroid injections are in common use as a remedial measure for low back pain. This injection is a back pain medication, which provides instant relief for back pain. This form of medication not only brings relief to back pain, but it also helps in rehabilitation programs though enabling the patient to undergo stretching exercises. It also helps in relieving pain in the cervical and mid-lumbar region.

In cases of severe back pain, injections are the best pain reliever because the medicines are more effective than those medicines taken orally as they directly reach the internal point of the source of back pain. Most injections have an anti-inflammatory effect, and some are used for long term therapy while others are administered for short term. Some injections are given for radicular pain, which is related to pain in the legs arising out of back pain. Medicines have been tested through clinical trials conducted on patients suffering from back pain. Interviews with patients being administered specific drugs reveal the effect of the drug through the patient’s personal experience.

Although medicines have a good effect on relieving back pain either on a short or long term basis, other methods of treatment like physical exercises and chiropractic treatment have been proven to be equally effective in certain instances. The main benefit here is that these non-medicinal treatments do not have any side effects. Back pain medication involving steroid injections can have many side effects. Cortisone injections are often used when the back pain becomes unbearable. Corticosteroids are a group of medicines, which can be taken orally, by application on the skin, or by administering intravenously. Although these medicines have an immediate effect on the body, the side effects cannot be ignored. Side effects include a rise in blood sugar, risk of being affected by cataracts, and deficiency in immunization.

Various therapies provide relief for back pain. They have yielded varied results depending upon the magnitude of the problem and proper diagnosis. All have benefits in their own medical way. While going for any therapy, you should consult a doctor, and take their advice before following any particular medicinal or other therapy. Alternative medicine therapy has proved to be quite effective, and many sufferers follow this course of treatment.
