Musculoskeletal disorders are among the most common reasons people seek medical attention. They affect all age groups and frequently cause disability, impairments and handicaps. They consist of a variety of different diseases that cause pain or discomfort in the bones, joints, muscles or surrounding structures. They can occur as a sudden problem, can develop into chronic problems, they can cause localized or very diffused symptoms. The incidence of these problems increases with age.

 

The most common musculoskeletal disorders are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, tendinitis, chronic low back pain and fibromyalgia.

 

Osteoarthritis is a general term associated with the joint pains that so many folks get as they age. It occurs in many joints including the knees, hips and hands and causes pain, stiffness and swelling but not the destruction of the joints seen with rheumatoid arthritis.

 

Osteoarthritis symptoms come and go and are treated with anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen or Aleve, physical therapy, warm compresses and range of motion exercises.

 

Rheumatoid arthritis is a destructive joint disease that is associated with a history of other autoimmune disorders (those where the body produces substances that actually attack one’s own body). Rheumatoid arthritis causes joint pain, stiffness, limited range of motion and often severe deformity of the joints. It is treated with many of the same medications as osteoarthritis but often times require very strong prescription medications given by a specialist called a rheumatologist.

 

According to American College of Rheumatology standards, a person has rheumatoid arthritis if he or she meets at least four of the following seven criteria:

 

• Morning stiffness

 

• Pain and swelling

 

• At least one swollen area in the finger, wrist or hand for six weeks straight

 

• Equal symptoms in joints on both sides of the body for six weeks straight

 

• Presence of rheumatoid nodules

 

• Positive blood test for rheumatoid factor

 

• X-ray showing damage to bones in the affected joints

Back pain from arthritis is caused by problems of the muscles and skeleton. Back pain can be associated with many of the commonly known disorders of the muscles and skeleton including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Unlike some disorders of the bones, which may be temporary and not destructive to the joints of the knees, hands, or hips, rheumatoid arthritis can cause permanent disablement and impairment that can be painful and is normally incurable. Rheumatologists say that a person has rheumatoid arthritis if they suffer from a number of symptoms for a period of time. Some of the markers of the blood can be tested, and if present and test positive for rheumatoid factor, then it is confirmed that the patients will suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.  It is also possible to get an X-ray to assess the damage to the bones at the affected joints.
